Nerdicus SNES Review #5 : Actraiser 2

Title :  Actraiser 2

Publisher : Enix

Genre : Platformer / Action / Simulation

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1993

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $10-$15

For the most part, sequels are a double-edged sword. You're getting a new game based on something you've already loved, but publishers have the habit of making changes when they really didn't need to. I don't know why this occurs so much. Maybe they're trying to make things different, in fear of their customers thinking the sequel is just a rehash of the original with better graphics. Sometimes, there's nothing wrong with that. Other times, I think they BELIEVE that they are heading in the right direction, when in actuality, they aren't.

Unfortunately for Actraiser, it suffered this fate with it's second game.

Nerdicus SNES Review #4 : Actraiser

Title :  Actraiser

Publisher : Enix

Genre : Platformer / Action / Simulation

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $7-$9

There were quite a few games in the SNES library that earned the privilege of being replayed more than once. These were the games that did everything right to the point where I was done, I just had to go back to it. Even years down the line I continue to play some of these games just for the hell of it. Call it a trip down memory lane, or perhaps it's just my desire to play some good games.

Nerdicus NES Review #74 : Batman Return of the Joker

Title :  Batman Return of the Joke

Publisher : Sunsoft

Genre : Platformer / Action

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $7-$9

So after playing through the Batman Returns game by Konami, my faith waned a little bit that I'll find another decent Batman game on the NES. So I turned back to Sunsoft, hoping that Batman Return of the Joker would fit the bill. This was a more direct sequel of the original Sunsoft classic. The formula remains the same, and this is how it should be. After all, if it 'aint broke don't fix it.

But somehow, they broke it.

Nerdicus SNES Review #3 : Acme Animation Factory

Title :  Acme Animation Factory

Publisher : Sunsoft

Genre : Paint / Animation Tool

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1994

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $7-$9

Meeeeehhhhhh....Wassup, Doc? Who didn't love Looney Toons when they were a kid? I mean, we grow up on Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Yosemite Sam. I think there was even a time when I wanted to be Wile E. Coyote.....explosions and all. I drew these characters constantly when I was younger, and even today I can still pretty much draw Bugs Bunny with my eyes closed. So when a game comes out where I can animate the very characters I grew up watching, I just had to try it.

Nerdicus NES Review #73 : Batman Returns

Title :  Batman Returns

Publisher : Konami

Genre : Beat 'Em Up

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1993

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $7-$9

You know, I was all excited when I realized that a sequel to the epic Batman game for the NES was released. After all, with Batman being such a raging success, you would think that they would just follow the same formula with Batman Returns. Well, not exactly.

Nerdicus NES Review #72 : Batman

Title :  Batman

Publisher : Sunsoft

Genre : Platformer / Action

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1990

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $5-$6

I don't care what anyone says. To this day, I still think that Michael Keaton is the greatest portrayal of the Caped Crusader. Don't get me wrong, Christian Bale was awesome, but Michael Keaton still dons the crown in my book. And here we are, at the cusp of Nintendo greatness. The Batman Video Game. It's not often you get a good game based on a movie. Not only that, but a game that ties pretty closely to the movie itself. But then again, this wasn't made by the horror that is LJN.

Nerdicus Genesis Review #2 : AAAAHH! Real Monsters!

Title :  AAAHH!! Real Monsters

Publisher : Viacom

Genre : Platformer

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1995

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $6-$7

Growing up in the nineties meant one thing - you spent your Saturday mornings and weekdays after school watching Nick Cartoons. This was Nickelodeon's golden years of animation, and they produced a slew of hits such as Rocco's Modern Life, Rugrats, and of course, Aaaahh!! Monsters (which in my opinion, was one of the best.)

Nerdicus Genesis Review #1 : 688 Attack Sub

Title :  688 Attack Sub

Publisher : Electronics Arts

Genre : Submarine Simulator

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $5-$7

What better way to start off my Genesis reviews than by playing one of the more obscure games from the Genesis library. 688 Attack Sub. Some of you may think that this is just an epic remake of Battleship. Not really. There is much, much more to this.

Nerdicus NES Review #65: Baseball Simulator 1000

Title :  Baseball Simulator 1000

Publisher : Culture Brain

Genre : Sports - Baseball

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1990

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $3-$5

Sometimes, you just have to add some bizarre elements to sports games to make people want to buy them. Going back to Base Wars, you control teams filled with robots that fight each other upon close calls. Well, in Baseball Simulator 1000, you've got balls that cause earthquakes, and pitches that go around 1000 mph.

Yup, this is Baseball Simulator 1000.

Nerdicus NES Review #64 : Baseball

Title :  Baseball

Publisher : Nintendo

Genre : Sports - Baseball

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1985

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $3-$5

The next 8 reviews I'm posting are going to be insanely quick. They're all Baseball related, and I really don't feel like devoting a lot of time to these sport games that just end up being the same thing rehashed over and over again.

So here we go. 8 quickie reviews. Let's get these over with. I mean, come on? Baseball? In the middle of winter? No thanks.

Nerdicus NES Review #63 : Base Wars

Title :  Base Wars

Publisher : Ultra Games

Genre : Sports (with ROBOTS)

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $5-$7

Baseball. One of the slowest sports, yet I still watch it. Playing it though, not so much. Especially video games. But when you add Robots to the mix, well now. That's a whole different story.

Nerdicus SNES Review #2 : 7th Saga

Title :  7th Saga

Publisher : Enix

Genre : RPG

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1993

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $15-$20

Ah, 16-bit RPG's. I don't think there was ever anything better to indulge myself with as a 10 year old kid. In case you didn't realize, or you don't remember from my earlier posts, RPG's were my thing growing up. I craved them. Thirsted for them. Desired them. NEEDED THEM. Aghhh!!! Even now, RPG's are my obsession. I'm currently breezing my way through BRAVELY DEFAULT for the DS, and boy does it bring back some awesome memories of a company that I loved, then hated, and now am beginning to love again.

Nerdicus NES Review #62 : Barker Bill's Trick Shooting

Title :  Barker Bill's Trick Shooting

Publisher : Nintendo

Genre : Shooter

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $7-$10

Shooter games weren't really my thing during the NES era. I think I told someone once before that I used my zapper for outside "man-hunt" games more than playing Nintendo games. In fact I had an extra broken zapper that I pulled the cord out of. Can't you just picture me running down my block, flailing my arms, and firing away with my blaster?

Nerdicus SNES Review #1 : 3 Ninjas Kick Back

Title :  3 Ninjas Kick Back

Publisher : Sony Imagesoft

Genre : Beat Em Up

Players : 1 / 2 Player

Release Date : 1994

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $10-$15

So it's time to spice things up a little bit. I know it could be quite tiresome to deal with reading NES reviews constantly, so after hearing the feedback from a few people about doing some 16 bit reviews, I figured the best course of action would be to alternate during the week.

Nerdicus NES Review #61 : The Bard's Tale

Title : The Bard's Tale

Publisher : Electronics Arts / FCI

Genre : RPG

Players : 1 Player

Release Date : 1991

Estimated Value (as of today's date) : $5-$10

I'm a nerd. There's not much debate about that. When it comes to video games, the one genre that always seems to quench my DnD-esque thirst are the RPG's. Without a doubt they were the games I played the most of throughout my youth. Dragon Warrior (quest), Final Fantasy, and this little guy right here. This game, called THE BARD's TALE, which was one of the most epic role-playing games of it's generation.
